“less is more”

There is an adage in design that the sign of a good designer is in what they leave out of a room more so than what they put in… or something to that effect anyway. Essentially “less is more”. The maestros at Studio Ko have, in their Moroccan project Villa E, created a house that speaks volumes of this mantra and through impeccable detailing and finishes have ensured this incredible home, though simple at first glance, is as interesting and intricate as any.

The monolithic patchwork bronze door with a stunning curved handle creates a fortress-like atmosphere upon approach. Indeed, the villa’s setting high on a bluff with solid stone walls makes this home look somewhat impenetrable. Inside however, the design turns into an unexpectedly light mood with soft white walls, large expanses of glass and the most beautiful floating ceiling (my favourite part of the whole design).

While the large windows allow a generous view onto the surrounding scenery, Studio Ko have brought the landscape into the house with natural elements such as the stone fireplace and stunning vertical timber cladding.

In a remote corner of Africa this house truly is a triumph (to say nothing of the two spectacular bathrooms and that pool!)… and with minimal furniture and only a handful of finishes, Villa E really is a case of less IS more.
