Home Grown – The SawMill House

This home has been created through the strong design language that reflects not only the owner’s, but also the architect’s, desire to create a home that has an honest and grounded approach to the building materials used with an emphasis on capturing and recycling as many by-products of the surrounding industrial area as possible. The result is a home that responds perfectly to its environment and to the client’s needs

The style of the house, a long and airy pavilion perched on the edge of a grass precipice, has a particularly Australian feeling about it with the materials used being raw, textured and authentic – almost like a modern day bush shack.

For me, the innovation in this house is in the use of recycled concrete that has been free poured into steel moulds to create one tonne blocks, which as the architect explains it “anchor [the house] into the landscape and a dynamic active building envelope to regulate the internal environment.”

Internally, I love the bespoke metal clad kitchen joinery that will tarnish and age over time. The furniture too has been custom made for the home and follows on from the architectural theme of being honest and grounded.
