blowing up plaid…revisited

With influence from 1920’s menswear, London based Alex Huang‘s Spring Summer 2014 collection brings together button-ups and over-sized coats in a mash-up of classic patterns.

Argyle hounds-tooth plaid Prince of Wales check, the London-based designer celebrates the patterns of old from a modern perspective with each look in this latest line. Classic prints are livened up with shades of blue, turquoise and yellow alongside texture-heavy materials. Giving the patterns a further update, Huang plays with the scale and proportion of the prints by blowing up plaid and enlarging argyle.

Full of tradition with its many tailored pieces in standard patterns the collection keeps fresh by introducing colour and volume to the garments. Pairing stripes with checks on time-honored collared blouses and cropped wide-leg trousers, the frenzy of patterns makes for a very non-traditional effect and brings a laid-back sensibility to otherwise clean-cut looks. But for me its all about those wide legged trousers !
