It was a busy week in Sydney with Design Ex and the Belle interior design awards 2012 hosted by Belle editor and chief Neale Whitaker .The sumptuous setting was executed by design editor and stylist Steve Cordony transforming the Coco Republic venue into true Belle Luxe style transporting Sydney's design elite to the "Chateau Marmont Light". Picking up gongs were Smart Design Studio, Russel and George,George Livissians and Designer of the Year was awarded to Iain Halliday for BKH.

For someone so young Adam Cornish is soon becoming one of Australia's most discussed and awarded product designers collaborating with suppliers and exhibiting across the global design scene. I caught up with Adam at Sydney's Design Ex exhibiting his interlocking hanging pots which I just adore.

What I love about his work is the level of complicated simplicity, each piece is a work of art, it looks simple but you know its not.

MEET DR.SPUNK the dark side to recycling

Whilst visiting Design Ex in Sydney this week I stumbled across Dr Spunk whom is all about being "Green" as long as it comes in Black. Dr Spunk applies a polyurea elastomer surface coating called bespunk which embodies flexibility, tear strength, resistance waterproof and ecological qualities creating an alternative, recycling concept that gives an old item a new life.
A brilliant solution for hospitality or outdoor furniture especially when the budget doesn't allow for a new purchases or when working on a project with sustainability aims.

Ridge Road Residence reflects it's environment perfectly, creating viewing platforms to take in the natural beauty of the plot. Melbourne based "Studio Four" have created a residential home that despite its black skin and cubist design it allows the coastal landscape take center stage. I just love everything about this stunning piece of architecture, from the framed windows rather than a massive pane of glazing to the minimalist approach to the cabinetry and kitchen. What I feel really makes this project so successful is despite the monochromatic pallet the home still looks warm, calm and inviting.

Worple’s lake house in Ontario by MOS

Off the rugged coast Georgian Bay in Ontario Canada the Becca family purchased a U shaped Island on the northeastern side of Lake Huron with two aging cottages and a two-story boathouse. Engaging Michael Meredith of MOS, a young interdisciplinary practice then based in Toronto.
They proposed a series of buildings that would form a “necklace” around the island, a main cottage and a series of outbuildings that so the family can accommodate more guests during summer. The finishes within the project are simple, restrained and hip providing the perfect setting for family gatherings during a stormy winters day or a long endless summer. Yep I want .... I so want one.

Zaha Hadid and Paola Navone took thousands of design lovers on a journey to an enchanted secret garden. The Secret Garden located in Milan, during the Salone Del Mobile 2012 contained giant pods of woven hazelnut branches, glowing lights, and hidden treasures. Both Poala and Zaha created two different projects that blended effortlessly into one installation. It's installations and collaborations like this that keeps the Salone Del Mobile at the forefront of design.

Craig Spencer only uses Black…!!

It's not true Craig Spencer doesn't only use black. New Zealand born Sydney based interior designer Craig Spencer whom is renowned for his moody glamorous hues of black & smokey greys has stepped out from the dark side to reveal a brighter side to Craig Spencer design. Craig was given total flexibility to create absolutely anything after designing for his client at his previous home, the only client input revolved around the redesign of the floor plan. Craig's fearless approach to colour injected throughout the project is balanced by the calm white living space but it's the level of detail that really got my attention, look closely to find little pops of colour within the kitchen cabinetry door edging..... love it!

OMG how hot are these little numbers, independent design studio Lindstén Form based in Stockholm, Sweden have just offered up these little babies after a successful launch at the Milan furniture fair 2012. Johan Lindstén's is the head-designer his products possess an unique and distinguished design that create interest with its unexpected details. The shape and expression combined with function is essential to the his work.

it’s whats below the Gallery of Modern Art in Varna, Bulgaria

Bulgarian based Studio Mode were commissioned to create the Graffiti Cafe located underneath Gallery of Modern Art in Varna, Bulgaria. Just why it's called the graffiti cafe is beyond me but never the-less I love this project. The timber struts take on a paper like quality reminiscent of book folding art, however the struts not only serve as a key design element they also double as an acoustic system solving sound and ventilation issues.The result is breathtaking and it sits perfectly as an art-space below the Gallery.

Hare + Klein there’s no place like home

Sydney based Hare + Klein is one of my favorite interior designers. This multi-award winning interior design practice lead by Principal Meryl Hare create projects that have a wonderful sense of luxury with wide walkways, soaring foyers and well thought cabinetry and joinery creating projects that reflect the clients aspirations.

Whether it's a warehouse conversion, beach house , apartment or a house in Bellview Hill what stands out to me is that all of Hare + Klein's residential projects feel and look welcoming... a place to retreat and relax.
