It was the hottest, most stylish ticket in town and it was indeed a generous gesture of Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin to open their home in celebration of the launch of Catherine’s stunning Deco rug Collection in collaboration with Designer Rugs. The historic mansion that is Iona was the perfect backdrop, with Catherine’s striking interiors and the walls clad in CM’s signature wallpapers, from the inky black ballroom to the claret red library, providing the colour foils which saw the rugs literally pop from the floor.
Reflecting the forthcoming Luhrmann motion picture production of The Great Gatsby in which large scale versions of the rugs appear, the event took on a classically elegant tone, with white jacketed waiters serving Ruinart champagne and Belvedere dry martinis…as Barry Maclean who performs the role of the Klipspringer in the film (the boarder ‘in residence’ in Gatsby’s mansion who frequently tickled the ivories) – played to an appreciative audience from the worlds of interiors, fashion and film. What a magical night it was….
