Melbourne based Blackmilk teamed up with White Sparrow enlisted to design and create the VRC’s Spring Racing Carnivals marquees. With their little trotters firmly placed on the track, Inspired by fashion and horses they let their imaginations run wild to develop a whimsical, bold and beautiful interpretation of these themes, driven by equine influences and the creativity of haute Couture fashion.
Release the hounds! With a spin on the role of the hunter, being the horse itself, this theme evokes the refined era of the English Country side.
Reminiscent of the den or library of an English manor in which one would sip their whisky as stories of the hunt are exchanged, this theme will make the large space feel warm and cosy with its earthy colour palate, and textured furnishings featuring exposed brick, leather upholstery, beautiful woods, gilt frames, all lit by enormous modern chandeliers that will throw a warm light and ambience over the space.
The tranquility of The Pasture will invite guests inside with its customised dandelion covered meadow. This theme depicts the calm, idyllic and pretty environment to which every trained horse surely longs to one day be released, as symbolised by the horse head sculptures gazing longingly at the pasture from their wall decal cages. This is a landscape for pure pleasure, relaxation and nourishment. Dotted with tall timber trees and wild flowers and warmed by the soft golden light of the sun, the pasture encourages frivolity and simple pleasure using crisp clean colours and natural materials such as timber paneling, tables and stools
Inspired by the vision of wild horses running across untouched sands, Bareback in The Hamptons presents a clean, fresh interior design that depicts a sense of light and space through its simple monochrome colour palate and the pop of fresh greenery brought in through the use of live plants.
The New York link is representative of the modern edge applied to this beach side theme. Weatherboard and louver shutter paneled walls will set the coastal style, contrasted with modern furniture pieces and punctuated with soft fern foliage.
Inspired by the chess piece featuring the horse’s head, The Knight is a royal blue and white scheme. The checkerboard floor and life size chess pieces link back beautifully with the chess theme and turned legs on high gloss tables and chairs complimented with chess piece stools and reflected by tall French mirrored wall panels give a sense of larger than life fantasy to the space. The patterned wall paper walls feature horses’ heads bursting from a bunch of rich blue hydrangeas and is reminiscent of the animal silhouette patterns seen all over the catwalk this year. The soft pattern provides feminine touch to the crisp space and works beautifully contrasted with the industrial pendant lighting and bold structured dining chairs.
The height of fantasy and folklore, the Unicorn represents true imagination and beauty much like the fashion of the races. This room reflects of the prestige of horse racing and the chance to play prince and princess for a day. No luxury will be spared in this rich red and striking white environment of pure opulence.
Rich swathes of red velvet will be dramatically drawn back to command attention to the beveled mirror long bar. Enormous, lavish French chandeliers will descend over the tables dressed with crisp white linens and tailored upholstered chairs. Guests will feel like kings and queens as they dine and socialize in this most extravagant of rooms all under the watchful gaze of the eight Unicorn statues that hang high on the walls around them.
This will be the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s most prestigious rose.
Inspired by Charles Le Mindou’s fantastical haute Couture gowns made from real hair and worn by icons such as Lady Gaga, this theme focuses on the beautiful tresses of the horses’ mane. Long locks of beautiful silken hair will feature in the space complimented by the earthy colours and distinctive equipment, materials and textures found within the stable. Leather upholstery and saddle shaped seats, raw timber wall and floor paneling, straw, metallic elements reminiscent of the bit and bridle will be brought in through lighting and furniture treatments to create a surprising land, the space will be comfortable yet refined.
As the name suggests, Show Pony is unashamedly glamorous and bold! The striking feature puce colour will be dramatic against the black and white backdrop. Custom made designer furniture pieces and elaborate chandeliers will make the elite fashion statement for which the show pony is known.
Mirrored panels reflect the vanity of the show pony and give it the feeling of a French Madame’s boudoir whilst making the stunning lounge feel twice as large. Quilted luxurious fabrics and high back bar stools further define the luxurious and elegant tone of this marquee set high above the crowds.
