DOUBLE BAY HOUSE

A complete overhaul of a narrow dark terrace house in the harbourside Sydney suburb of Double Bay by Tobias Partners has resulted in an intimate jewel box of a family home. The key challenges on the long narrow site included harnessing natural light and achieving generous communal interior spaces whilst minimising the impact on neighbouring properties.  The original facade was retained, with the rest of the house being completely demolished. The new design maximises natural light and cross ventilation to all spaces by north-facing clerestory windows along the length of the long building responding to the tropical climate of Sydney.  A bridge hangs over the void above the kitchen /dining space to allow the most public area of the house to be enjoyed as you circulate on both floors. The width of the site is maximised also by fully opening up to a landscaped side passage blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor.  The finishes are beautifully edited with little injections of drama from the marble and ballastrate Total love for this little terrace!

  1. Love the response to this house brief however my only question would be why run the vertical slats through on the staircase to encase the space under the stairs which otherwise could be inclusive to the dining zone?
