When I last wrote about Jean-Louis I used the word swoon to describe his work. Nothing has changed; I still swoon when I see his work, but this current project of his stirs different emotions, namely wonder. The project, in Paris, has elements that really shouldn’t work together, but do in a spectacular way. I cannot stop looking at the gold kitchen with marble floor and splashback or the tromp l’oeil wall and ceiling of the living room for instance. The spaces look like they shouldn’t work or even be nice, but they do and are, and moreover they look stunning. The palate of silver, grey, blue and gold is used to full effect in the materials present: velvets, leathers, timbers, resins and tiles, and it is this mastering of colour and texture that set a Deniot design apart and make him a bit of a wonder.
