And the IDEA winners are …..

The IDEA awards were hosted at the National Gallery of Victoria on Friday night in Melbourne Australia celebrating Australian design. The event was insightful fun and honest. The highlight for many was the MC Paul Hecker (Australian design royalty) whom gave a candid insight into his world discussing the tribulations of 2013. His words resonated with many designers that struggled through 2013 like many design studios globally. But for the most part the vibe was upbeat, fun and very Melbourne! Here is a peak of just a few of the designers that took home a gong along with plenty of pap shots!

PS … winning projects are not matched to the pap shots the follow.

Emerging Designer – Foolscap Studio

Projects by interdisciplinary design studio, Foolscap Studio, centre around the interior environment and a growing understanding of how people interact with and experience those spaces. Evident in the studio’s body of work across retail and hospitality fitouts, temporary event spaces, pop-up bars and product design is a leaning towards functional and clever, sustainably designed environments. As a young, enthusiastic and energetic creative studio, innovation and experiential design are prime drivers.

Event  – The Living Room Theatre, I Love Todd Sampson .

The Living Room Theatre’s production, I Love Todd Sampson, pioneered the integration of architecture, installation art, lighting design, music, film and performance in Australia. The multidisciplinary theatre work unfolded over 5,000 square metres of Pier 2/3 Walsh Bay, as the audience followed the protagonist through the space. Nine teams of architects designed and built installations – responding to an outline narrative and key words/emotional states. Set designs draw the audience through the space deeper into a constructed reality.

Architect teams: Mac-Interactive Architects, Collins Karlsson Wagner, Carte Blanche, Flatpac, Sam Crawford Architects, Genevieve Lilley Architects, WLTS, Michaela Gleave, Carter Williamson Architects and Archrival

Hospitality – Breathe Architecture, Captain Melville

Amid a colony in a state of dichotomy, 1853 saw the construction of Mac’s Hotel – one of Victoria’s first licensed hotels. This reinvention of a dark inner-city nightclub into a restaurant and bar was inspired by the ghosts of the hotel’s first patrons. In the spirit of this historic rebel narrative, the fitout is conceptually based on the scene of mass occupation of Australia during the Gold Rush.

Workspace over 1000 Group GSA, A Working Community

Realised over 30,000 square metres, this project was an opportunity to collocate teams for the first time and to develop a sense of community and collaboration, both vertically and horizontally. An evolving sense of place is created through a soft approach to built elements and diverse and subtle use of colour, loose items and team spaces. The strategy establishes a pattern of space that naturally draws people together, with clear circulation paths and hubs placed near best amenity.
