17th Century Canal House

In some ways, the Canal House itself is typical of the houses built in the 17th Century on the banks of the Herengracht canal, one of the three largest canals in the city of Amsterdam. After serving as a hotel the canal house as been beautifully restored and given a new life as a family residence. Studio RUIM headed by Rene van der Leest and Sigrid van Kleef, a pioneering duo with a background in theatrical and costume design as well as interior design.

Whist the home maintains its old world charm through the carefully restored paneling woodwork and ornate high ceilings the house has been awarded contemporary aesthetics through the introduction of modern materials such as steel, Corian and concrete.

What an articulate refurbishment, sensitive of the heritage of the site, loaded with charm responding to the needs of comfortable family living.
