Continuing my love affair with all things Venetian I came across this apartment in Manhattan. The project is located in Gramercy Park and what began as a modest tidy up of the apartment transformed into a total renovation lasting 5 years with designer Jim Luigs. Inspiration is all around us and for the client of this project reading three volumes of The Stones of Venice became his source. Throughout the apartment there are murals and motifs from the volumes. Text has been applied as a decorative layer in many of the rooms, most notability in the dining room. These books provided the guiding philosophy for the renovation for the client. Throughout the home there are some classic Italian designer pieces and a great deal of custom work. Craftsman have been engaged to revive techniques such a lacquer work on the bedroom walls and ceiling, library and cabinetry. This project, like Venice, has a sense of theatre and Luigs own theatrical point of view is evident. The balance between what might have become stage sets is finely handled and attributed to the meticulous craftsmanship, design resolution and detailing. A little slice of Northern Italy in Lower Manhattan.
