The Ritz Carlton is synonymous with old world glamour and elegance so when I found the David Collins Studio 2013 Ritz Carlton Residences, MahaNakhon, in Bangkok I was intrigued how this iconic brand could be reinterpreted to a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining a sense of authenticity and grandeur that this brand commands. This residence actually made my jaw drop. This apartment is so luxurious that even the kitchen walls are lined with Thai Silk wallpaper!
This apartment is beyond chic. Everything is considered and striking. Colour and saturation are balanced with powerful elements of symmetry and repetition. The bold use of stone in the kitchen and bathrooms is softened by the dove grey – almost velvet like carpet in the bedroom and private spaces. Highlights of gold on the hardware of furniture and the base of lamps or the corner of the four poster bed unify the colour story. Contemporary pattern is upholstered onto furniture and contrasts with essential traditional elements. The geographical and cultural context of the site is also considered. Stylistically Asian influences have been appropriated and distilled to the simplest line which forms the basis of a decorative element.
