Such Great Heights

The Vietnamese firm MM++ Architects are known for their highly creative and individualised approach to design with outcomes that produce distinctive homes that connect their client to nature and capitalise on the surrounding environment.

This recently completed project in Ho Chi Minh City is a perfect example for everything the firm believes in. Set on a narrow site and surrounded by residential homes and traditional shops, the home expresses the daily life of the local people – that is, lived in and on the street as much as it is in the home – by creating an impressive movable front façade. The façade has a small door for access when closed, but when open removes all barriers between the house and the street and thrusts the inhabitants into the hustle and bustle.

From here, a set of steel and timber stairs moves upward through the floors to the upper level with sun-drenched roof terrace. Throughout an emphasis has been placed on “lightness” with skylights, internal windows and slatted gangways from the stairs to each floor filtering light from the top all the way down to the bottom floor. This modern home is an impressive response to traditional life in Vietnam.
