Located on Lagoi Bay, Bintan Island, new-build The Sanchaya (which means ‘collection’ in Sanskrit) was conceived by the developer and P49 Deesign as a luxury estate for guests to feel as if they were merely staying at their second home. Space, privacy and intimacy were key drivers.

Comprised of a collection of freestanding villas and one stately ‘Great House’ of suites, the 17.2 acre property with a only 30 rooms in total equates to a serious amount of real estate to call home for a few nights; if we were to number crunch, that’s about 11,600 square metres per person.

Conceptualised as an intimate work of mosaics, a mélange, a collage; a handful of villas are distinctly Thai in style, others take architectural cues from the monochromatic bungalows of 19^th century Malaya and Singapore, whilst the Great House is reminiscent of colonial influence and the European salons of a bygone era. The interiors are equally diverse. There is a bar and library that brings to mind a classic gentlemen’s club; Art Deco details, Queen Anne pedestal dining tables, teak armoires, pony hair rugs, wrought iron chandeliers and other eclectic embellishments are found throughout. In the villas & suites, an intricate curation of Pan-Asian artifacts and antiques represent no less than seven cultures from the South China Sea to Malacca Strait.
