Breathing Space – NYC

Breathing space was the central theme of this apartment from the very first days of searching for the property right through to the furniture selection. Wanting a space that would open out and feel a part of Central Park, the owners came across this pre-war apartment on Central Park West and immediately new it was the one.

Enlisting architect Douglas Wright and interior designer Fawn Galli, the owners set about transforming the space (which, notwithstanding a 70s update, was still in an original condition) into their dream home. The essence of the pre-war style was retained and celebrated while modern elements who added to give the home its own personality.

When it came to the interior scheme, the owners took their own brave direction by having concrete floors died blue, richly veined marbles for the bathroom and electric pops of colour for the upholstered pieces. This bravery was offset by muted washes of colour for the walls and the seemingly sparse use of furniture – as they explained, having space around the furniture was important so that the form of each piece had its chance to breathe.
