Inspired by Swedish Runes

Swedish Anna-Carin has travelled back into her ancestry, creating four stunning new designs, for her second rug collection and collaboration with rug innovators Designer Rugs. Her inspiration coming from the first system of writing developed by the Norse peoples: the Runes.
The Runes functioned as letters, but were much more than just letters in the sense in which we today understand the term. Each rune was an ideographic or pictographic symbol of some cosmological principle or power, and to write a rune was to invoke and direct the force for which it stood. Each rug holds a special meaning and belief behind it.
Through this collection, she invokes the force of the earth goddess, wealth, respite and family unity into the homes where these rugs lie.
Growing up on a farm in the South of Sweden, Anna-Carin’s rug collection is the embodiment of cross-cultural pollination. Her unique aesthetic is very much the product of a diverse life journey. An accomplished interior designer with a body of work that spans the globe from Europe to South-East Asia to Australia; Anna-Carin’s past and her childhood experiences have hewn a wonderful narrative for her new collection of rugs.
Traditionally, nomadic rug designs were often inspired by a myth or a poem and the rug would reinforce and illustrate the story. As a modern nomad each of Anna-Carin’s designs tells a story from her childhood.
Each rug is handmade and comes in standard sizes of 240 x 300 cm and 300 x 400cm. Each design is hand knotted in 100% Wool. The NORSE collection is on display at Designer Rugs’ showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland and viewable online.
